BATTLECRY involves two love stories and a rescue.  AMELIA, who lives on a farm just north of Gettysburg, is affianced to FRANK, a union officer of German-American descent determined to prove his bravery.  A Rebel soldier named Lil’ Joe, who is actually a woman in disguise, is secretly in love with another Reb, QUENTIN.  And BENJAMIN and SARAH are freed blacks who are leaving town to avoid capture by Rebel forces who would sell them into slavery.  Their struggles to find freedom, preserve their love, and vanquish death are played out against the background of the three days of fighting at Gettysburg. Through actual soldiers’ diaries and the conflict between Lee and Longstreet over how best to fight the battle, BATTLECRY dramatizes the human element in this great battle, ending in a stirring anthem of The Gettysburg Address.
